Time To Upgrade: These Are The Macs That Will Not Be Updated To macOS 27

Apple has officially detailed the hardware compatibility parameters for its forthcoming operating system, macOS 27. While the upcoming software iteration is anticipated to introduce numerous functional enhancements alongside an updated Liquid Glass design interface, certain legacy hardware architectures will no longer receive system upgrades. According to data provided by the manufacturer, the next big OS for Macs completely drops support for computers running on legacy Intel processors.

Consequently, the operating system upgrade will exclusively target devices powered by proprietary Apple Silicon M-series chipsets, alongside the MacBook Neo featuring the A18 Pro processor. This architectural transition establishes that several hardware models currently capable of operating on macOS Tahoe 26 will be excluded from the new deployment cycle.

The 2019 Intel version of the Mac Pro will not be updated to macOS 27.

Unsupported Mac Hardware Models:

  • 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020) equipped with four Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019)
  • Mac Pro (2019)
  • 27-inch iMac (2020)

Despite the removal of native Intel processor compatibility, the operating system retains the capability to execute legacy application software designed for the older x86 architecture. Apple confirmed that the Rosetta translation layer will remain operational within the software environment to facilitate developer timelines.

As we can read in the official documentation, “Rosetta was engineered to ease the transition to Apple silicon, and we intend to maintain its availability across the next two major macOS releases—extending through macOS 27—as a broad utility tool for Intel applications to assist developers in finalizing software migration. Beyond this specified timeframe, a functional subset of Rosetta features will be preserved strictly to maintain compatibility for older, unmaintained gaming titles that rely on legacy Intel frameworks.”

The official presentation of macOS 27 is scheduled to take place during the keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026) on Monday, June 8. Following the initial unveiling, the public software distribution is expected to roll out to all designated compatible computer models before the conclusion of the calendar year.
