New Wireless Tech Transmits Voice 100 Meters Deep

Researchers at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of South Korea have developed a new magnetic induction wireless technology capable of transmitting voice signals up to 100 meters underground. The system is designed to address critical safety communication gaps in military operations, mining industries, and rescue missions during natural disasters.

How Through-The-Earth Technology Works

Developed as part of the “Through-The-Earth” project, this communication breakthrough was demonstrated successfully at a depth of 100 meters. Traditional radio frequency communication systems can only penetrate a few meters into the ground. To overcome this limitation, the new system utilizes extremely low-frequency electromagnetic waves, generating an electric current that produces low-frequency radio magnetic induction. This physical mechanism allows the signals to pass efficiently through dense soil, concrete, and rock layers over much greater distances.

The technological innovation holds significant potential for various fields and operational scenarios, including:

  • Mining and offshore drilling operations;
  • Communication within underground tunnels;
  • Emergency relief efforts following earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or explosions;
  • Specialized military tactical applications.

Current Advantages and Limitations

A major technical advantage of this magnetic induction approach is that the voice signal experiences very little degradation as the transmission distance increases. However, the technology currently faces certain limitations, primarily its transmission speed, which is capped at approximately 2 kilobytes per second.

Future Goals: Miniaturization for Mobile Devices

Another challenge involves the physical dimensions of the equipment. The current system consists of a loop transmitting antenna measuring one square meter paired with a magnetic field receiver sensor.

Consequently, the next phase of development for the research team focuses on simplifying the system and reducing its scale. The ultimate goal is to downsize the hardware components so that this underground communication technology can be integrated into everyday portable mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
