Windows 11: Microsoft Suspends Important Update After Installation Errors

Microsoft has temporarily withdrawn the optional KB5079391 update for Windows 11 just one day after its release on March 26, 2026. The preview package, which included highly anticipated support for ultra-high-frequency monitors, was pulled from servers after a widespread installation flaw frustrated early adopters.

The issue primarily affected users who had the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle enabled in their system settings. During the download and installation process via Windows Update, the system would trigger Error 0x80073712.

Fortunately, the glitch did not result in system instability or “bricked” devices. Instead, the operating system failed to complete the update and automatically reverted to the previous stable version, allowing computers to continue functioning normally. To prevent further reports of failed installations, Microsoft opted for a preventive removal of the package while they investigate the root cause.

Delayed Features and Improvements

Although this update was not focused on security, it contained several usability enhancements that are now on hold. Key features included in the KB5079391 preview were:

  • Support for high-end displays with refresh rates reaching up to 1000 Hz.

  • General performance optimizations for modern gaming monitors.

  • Minor UI refinements and bug fixes for system navigation.

Microsoft has not yet provided a specific timeline for when these features will be redistributed. The company may release a hotfix with a new build number in the coming days or bundle the improvements into the upcoming April Patch Tuesday.

This technical setback occurs as Microsoft continues to emphasize its commitment to software quality and bug reduction. For many users, this episode reinforces the strategy of waiting several days before installing optional “preview” updates, as these non-mandatory patches often serve as a final testing ground before a broader public rollout.
