Samsung Galaxy XR Headset Launches With Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 And Google Gemini AI

After a long wait filled with leaks and postponements, Samsung has finally taken the wraps off its Galaxy XR, a next-generation mixed-reality headset built in partnership with Google and Qualcomm. Revealed on Tuesday (21), the device represents Samsung’s most ambitious step yet into the extended reality (XR) space, blending powerful hardware with intelligent software integration.

The headset features dual micro-OLED displays with a combined resolution of 3,552 × 3,840 pixels, approaching true 8K clarity. Users can switch between 60Hz, 72Hz, and 90Hz refresh rates, depending on the task or application. Two 6.5 MP external cameras provide real-world passthrough vision, allowing users to interact with their surroundings while wearing the device. These sensors can also record 3D photos and videos, further expanding creative possibilities.

Altogether, the Galaxy XR is equipped with eight cameras—two for external vision and six for inside-out positional tracking, eliminating the need for external sensors. It also supports hand and eye tracking, thanks to four internal cameras and additional sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and a flicker detector, ensuring precise motion and environment awareness.

Weighing 545 grams, the headset connects to a detachable battery pack weighing 302 grams. Samsung says the design evenly distributes weight across the forehead and back of the head for improved comfort during long sessions. Battery life averages around two hours, typical for high-end mixed-reality hardware.

Under the hood, the Galaxy XR runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, combined with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and six built-in microphones designed for accurate voice capture and spatial audio awareness.

One of the headset’s key innovations is its integration with Google Gemini, Google’s advanced AI assistant. This allows users to access contextual help, productivity features, and smart responses directly within the XR environment—bridging immersive computing with everyday utility.

The Samsung Galaxy XR is launching first in the United States and South Korea at a retail price of $1,799, with broader global availability expected in the coming months.
