CarPlay is being blocked for Tesla owners thanks to this unlikely reason

Tesla is notorious for its standalone ecosystem. But while the automaker is content in its own private Idaho, consumers have been begging for one thing for years: CarPlay integration. Luckily, back in November, a Bloomberg report revealed that the EV brand was working with Apple to bring CarPlay to Tesla’s infotainment system in the coming months — though no firm date was announced.

We’re already well into 2026 without a launch. Don’t fret, because (per a Bloomberg report from Mark Gurman) Apple and Tesla are still actively working to sort out any kinks in the process. But, the two companies face another very specific obstacle: iPhone users themselves.

Compatibility issues

Users need to update their iPhones

Tesla and Apple might be cooperating, but Apple Maps wasn’t at first. Synchronization errors appeared between Apple’s navigation app and Tesla’s own native interface, which messed up turn-by-turn directions. Glancing at a map while driving on a busy road is distracting enough, so Tesla asked Apple to make a few engineering tweaks on its end to make Apple Maps more compatible. Apple complied, and shipped a bug fix in a later iOS 26 update to help smooth things out.

So what’s the issue?

The giants are shaking hands, but iPhone users are still slow to update to iOS 26. In fact, fewer users than normal have reportedly updated their devices to Apple’s latest OS. According to Apple, only 74% of iPhones released in the last four years are running iOS 26 — and that doesn’t even mean they have the latest minor updates that include the bug fix CarPlay needs to run inside Teslas.

Essentially, the launch is stalled because not enough iPhone owners have the compatible software needed to patch the potholes in the CarPlay-Tesla integration. When enough users have the updated software and the bug fixes along with it, we can hopefully expect the rollout shortly after.
