Microsoft Introduces Option To Disable Bing Web Results In Windows 11

Microsoft has announced a long-awaited update for Windows 11 that addresses a persistent user complaint: the forced integration of Bing web results into the system’s Search and Start menus. Revealed during a Windows Insider program event in San Francisco, a new configuration option will allow users to completely disable online search results within the operating system.

Previously, users routinely criticized the feature for cluttering local searches. Queries intended to locate files, settings, or installed applications frequently returned irrelevant web content. To bypass this, users formerly had to modify the Windows Registry—a complex and risky process for the average user.

Key Search and Privacy Updates

The upcoming change introduces a streamlined toggle directly within the standard system settings.

  • Web Search Toggle: A new setting labeled “Show suggested search results” will be located under the Privacy & Security menu. Toggling this off completely deactivates internet-based queries.
  • Microsoft Store Filtering: Interface previews indicate that Microsoft is also testing an option to exclude Microsoft Store results from internal searches, further reducing unwanted content.
  • Faster Querying: Future updates will support search queries using as few as two characters, accelerating the local retrieval process.

Additional Windows 11 Enhancements

Alongside search modifications, Microsoft highlighted several performance and interface improvements aimed at optimizing the user experience:

Feature Area Description of Improvement
System Performance Faster overall search execution and optimized File Explorer startup times.
File Management Significant speed improvements during the bulk deletion of files.
Taskbar Flexibility Preview builds allow users to reposition the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen and adjust its size to maximize workspace.

These features are currently undergoing testing within preliminary Windows 11 builds. Microsoft expects to roll out these updates gradually to the general public in upcoming system releases.
