Free Apple Music Plan May Be Coming Soon, Leak Suggests

A recent data leak within the Android beta application code suggests that Apple Music may introduce a free subscription tier. This potential move aims to attract new users and democratize access to the music streaming platform.

According to code analysis shared by analyst Aaron Perris, the upcoming free tier will incorporate specific user restrictions, such as a limited number of track skips. While additional limitations are anticipated, the service is unlikely to adopt an ad-supported model. Apple executives have historically maintained that integrating public advertisements contradicts the company’s core philosophy. Oliver Schusser, Vice President of Apple Music, recently stated that utilizing advertising for free accounts risks devaluing the service and negatively impacting revenue distribution for artists.

However, market growth pressures may be prompting the Cupertino-based company to reevaluate its competitive positioning. Industry data indicates that the absence of a zero-cost entry point has hindered the expansion of Apple’s streaming platform compared to its primary competitors. For context, Spotify maintains roughly 30 million paying subscribers, and YouTube Music leverages Google’s expansive ecosystem. In contrast, market estimates indicate that Apple Music reached approximately 6 million subscribers in 2024. Offering a free tier serves as a strategic initiative to draw individuals who currently operate outside of the Apple ecosystem.

Although Apple has not issued an official comment regarding the leak, a restricted, ad-free tier holds significant potential to convert users. This strategy targets consumers who are dissatisfied with the disruptive advertising models used by competing platforms like Spotify.
