Meta Discontinues End-to-End Encryption For Instagram Direct Messages

Meta has officially ceased support for manual end-to-end encryption (E2EE) within Instagram’s Direct Messages (DMs). As of May 8, the feature is no longer available, and the company has begun the process of deleting encrypted chat histories. This move signals a shift in Meta’s strategy, as it encourages users seeking high-level privacy to transition their conversations to WhatsApp.

The decision to remove the protection stems from low user engagement; according to a Meta spokesperson, a negligible percentage of Instagram’s three billion users utilized the feature, which required manual activation. Due to this lack of adoption, the company decided to streamline its messaging services by removing the E2EE option from the Instagram interface entirely.

For the vast majority of users who utilized standard, unencrypted DMs, the experience remains unchanged. However, those who actively used encrypted “Secret Conversations” must take immediate action to avoid permanent data loss. Meta has confirmed that:

  • Chat Deletion: Encrypted messages that are not backed up or exported will be permanently removed from the system.
  • Data Export: Users with affected chats will receive in-app notifications providing a step-by-step guide on how to download their complete messaging history.
  • App Updates: Users on older versions of the Instagram app are advised to update to the latest version to ensure the data retrieval tools function correctly and to prevent the loss of media files saved within those threads.

Meta’s current stance positions WhatsApp as the primary platform for users who prioritize end-to-end encryption. While Instagram remains a hub for social interaction, its internal messaging security will no longer offer the specific manual encryption layer previously available. Users interested in maintaining protected dialogues are advised to migrate those specific threads to WhatsApp, where E2EE remains a default standard for all communications.
