Kindles are losing a useful feature, and Amazon isn’t to blame for once

One of the best Kindle features is the ability to send files directly to your device using Amazon’s Send to Kindle tool on the web. While that’s how most people move files into their Kindle library, a handful of apps also have Send to Kindle baked in — and one of the most useful integrations is Microsoft Word.

Back in 2023, Amazon spotlighted Word’s Send to Kindle integration, which lets you send documents from your PC directly to your Kindle library without leaving Word. It was perfect if you wanted to quickly read something on an E-ink screen instead of a laptop. However, unfortunately, Microsoft has quietly decided to pull the plug on it.

Microsoft recently updated its Send to Kindle support page to announce that its Word integration of it will no longer be supported starting on February 9, 2026 (via Good e-Reader).

Microsoft didn’t explain why it’s sunsetting the feature, but this appears to be purely Microsoft’s call rather than Amazon’s, since it’s a Word integration. The feature required a Microsoft 365 subscription, though odds are you already had one if you were using Word in the first place.

“Beginning February 9th, 2026, the Send to Kindle feature in Microsoft Word is going away across all platforms (Web, Win32, Mac),” Microsoft explained. “After this date, the feature will no longer receive support from Microsoft Word.”

You can still send Word documents to your Kindle, just not through Word

This will likely affect Kindle Scribe users the most

It’s important to note that while Microsoft is retiring its Send to Kindle Word integration, that doesn’t mean it will now be impossible to send a Word document to your Kindle. You can still upload a Word document and send it to your Kindle via Amazon’s official Send to Kindle site. Though admittedly, it won’t be as convenient as having it directly in Word’s export menu.

While this news is unfortunate for Kindle users, it may be especially frustrating for Kindle Scribe owners. The feature launched around the same time as Amazon’s first e-ink tablet and offered a fast, no-friction way to send Word documents to a Kindle Scribe for review and annotation. It also preserved formatting and fixed layouts, so Word documents didn’t look awkward or broken once they landed on a Kindle.

If you’ve never used Amazon’s Send to Kindle feature before, it’s a handy way to get any file you want on your Kindle, such as EPUB, PDF, DOC, DOCX, PNG, and many more. So if you want to take a break from staring at an LED screen to read an important document, or send something like a textbook to your Kindle to study, this is an easy way to do so, though the file size is limited to 200MB.

Although it sucks that Microsoft is ending support for Send to Kindle directly in Microsoft Word as of February 9, there are still lots of Kindle updates to look forward to this year, including a cheaper Kindle Scribe without a front light launching, new AI reading features, such as Story So Far and Ask This Book, and changes to how DRM-free e-books work, with the ability being added to download them as EPUB or PDF files.
