This upcoming Google Maps feature could save you in a pinch

If there’s one navigation app I always turn to first when I need help getting somewhere, it’s Google Maps. I use it for commuting to stay updated on traffic and road closures, and also when exploring a new city, like during my recent trips to Edinburgh and Brooklyn. While I think Google Maps does a great job with navigation, one thing I’ve noticed, and I’m sure many others have too, is that it’s not so kind to battery life, especially if you’re using it for long trips.

Luckily, it seems that Google is aware that Google Maps can have a habit of draining your battery, and is working on a solution. According to a recent report from Android Authority, Google is working on a new “power saving” mode for Google Maps, which will reduce the app’s battery consumption and potentially save you in a pinch.

This new power-saving mode was discovered by Android Authority in version 25.44.03.824313610 of the Google Maps for Android beta, and the publication also uncovered some code strings associated with it that describe how it works.

“To save battery, press the power button while driving. Only key information such as next turns will be shown,” one of the code strings states.

Although this new power-saving feature may seem like a game-changer, it naturally involves a trade-off as it significantly changes the appearance of Google Maps and reduces the amount of information displayed on your screen during navigation.

As shown in the images above from Android Authority, it makes Google Maps appear very minimalistic and monochrome, while removing almost all the user interface elements, including street names. The only UI elements that remain are the estimated time until you reach your destination, along with the arrow and lines indicating which direction to go. The report also states that audio guidance will function when Maps is in power-saving mode, so you’ll still hear it announce directions, like when to turn.

Reportedly, Google Maps’ power-saving mode will support walking, driving, and cycling, but it has not been confirmed yet whether it will also support public transit routes, such as buses or trains. Additionally, based on the version of the feature in the Google Maps for Android beta, it appears that power-saving mode will only work when your phone is in portrait mode, not landscape orientation.

Another tidbit that Android Authority discovered is that power-saving mode will be activated on Google Maps when the app is open and the device’s power button is pressed. So, at least if you’re driving or cycling, it will be very easy to activate.

Overall, this new power-saving mode for Google Maps looks very promising to me, and if you’re in a tight spot with a low battery, it could be a lifesaver. It’s important to note that this feature is still under development, so its appearance and how it works could change before it is released. It’s also unclear whether this feature will be available on iOS or only on Android.
